Project Description

When did you start Djing?
August 1988

What is it about thing the makes it interesting for you?
Finding the best music I can, playing it out and getting a good reaction from others who hear it, plus playing my personal favourites to people who appreciate them. Making something amazing from just a few pieces of plastic. The way some records can sound stunning in a certain time and place and mediocre the next time you play it. Learning the skill of timing and context and the never-ending quest to master the vagaries of different sound systems to get the best out of what’s in you record bag.

What makes you decide to play a certain record during one of your sets?
It either has to either fit my style to a tee, or be a record that stretches my musical boundaries, while still somehow fitting in… context again!

What’s your opinion on the importance of roots, traditions, respecting traditions and sources?
Personally, I’m big on all those things but I’m also conscious that too much ‘respect’ can be stifling. Music moves on and stays exciting where there is a healthy dose of disregard for tradition and roots. Some of our favoured musical styles, which are now steeped in their own tradition of 30+ years – like House and Electro – were initially slated by purists… stay alert and open minded!
